How do we plan?

Due to the complexity of mixed age classes we implement a skill based curriculum through a topic or theme. Our long-term plan maps the NC across a two year cycle, identifying which topics will be taught each term across each key stage. Cross-curricular links are planned to ensure learning has real purpose and incorporates the interests of children to promote engagement. The national curriculum for each key stage is highlighted termly to show coverage, thus ensuring all key skills are taught within each subject.

Each topic begins by finding out what children already know and what they would like to find out. We always try to include a ‘sparkle’ element to our planning by going on a visit to a special place, inviting a visitor into school or planning an exhibition of our learning to share with others.

In English and Maths, we follow the structured guidance of the NC for each year group, trying hard to link it to topic work where possible. We have a Maths Specialist Teacher at both Bentley and Copdock, ensuring high staff confidence and effective teaching to secure understanding of key concepts for each year group.

The Foundation Stage curriculum is planned to integrate into topic work within KS1 and is carefully mapped to the Early Learning Goals. All children are encouraged to investigate and explore using a range of indoor and outdoor equipment. Reception have the opportunity to plan their own learning and experiences are carefully structured to accommodate their interests and next steps in learning.
