Dear parents,
It was lovely to see so many of you at sports day last week. It was such a lovely morning and I'm sure you had great fun cheering your chilldren on! Thank you so much to the parents who supported the kite making too - it was a very busy morning and I really appreciated the extra pairs of hands! Now we just need some good kite-flying weather!
Learning this week
This week, in Wolves, for our topic work, we are continuing learning about Mersea Island - (geography),looking at the features of Mersea Island, in particular categorising physical and human features, and viewing features on differernt maps . We will continue to look at seaside holidays in the past, in particular at the how the children's parents and grandparents enjoyed seaside holidays (history)- if you have any experiences or photos of this, please share with your children! In science the children will be observing the seeds we planted and concluding the best conditions for germination. We will also look at how bulbs grow. In art we shall be looking at collage techniques.
In mathematics Reception will be continuing their daily practise of counting and subitising, and will be consolidating their work on different ways to make doubles and spotting odd and even numbers. Year 1 and Year 2 will be revising time, calendars and problem solving.
In English writing, we will continue to work from our new book 'Grandad's Island'. Grandad and Syd,have arrived at the island. The children will be describing the look of the island using expanded noun phrases and adjectives, and retelling the actions of the characters through carefully selected verbs. This is a narrative unit, and Year 1 and 2 will re-write the next step of the story. Reception will begin work on a book, 'The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch'. They will be exploring different aspects of the story, and orally retell the events. They will then start to write a new menu for the Lighthouse Keeper!
As usual, the children in Yr1 and Reception will have 30 minutes of phonics daily, while Year 2 use this time to practise spelling rules and grammar. Reception children are writing setences in their books using their phonics, daily, as part of their phonics lesson. All children will be listened to reading in their groups, practising decoding, use of intonation and expression and comprehension of what they are reading, including making inferences from the text, summarising and making predictions.
