Squirrel Class: Year 1 & 2 Pupils - Monday 20th April 2020
Date: 19th Apr 2020 @ 6:45pm
Wednesday 22nd April - Good morning Year 1 and Year 2. Hopefully you are now starting to get back into the routine of home learning. Remember to visit Spelling Shed as I can see most of you are not using this. Your spellings are set up on this every Friday. Today is a history focus and I'm pleased to hear lots of you have started to learn about Florence Nightingale. Today, you also have writing games which seem to have escaped your learning packs! So here is the game for today.
Waterfalls- goodle an image of a waterfall
Waterfalls are one of nature's absolute triumphs.
English
- Word class (determiner, adjective, noun, verb, adverb, preposition)
- Poetry
- Exploring metaphor
- Alliteration
Grammar game: Consequences
- Each player has a piece of paper.
- As instructed, each player writes down a predetermined type of word (see below).
- Each player then folds the paper to hide the word and passes the paper to the left.
- By the end, you have created some new wacky sentences, but have also hd fun revisiting all of the different word classes and their jobs.
Here is a the pattern I used and some of the outcomes (please note that the definitions are for how the words are being used in the context of this activity).
- Determiner (specifies a noun): e.g. a, the, this, that, one, his, etc.
- Adjective (describes a noun): e.g. fluffy, brown, enormous, orange, etc.
- Noun (person, place or thing): e.g. giraffe, London, penguin, boy, etc.
- Verb (to be, to do, to have): e.g. jumped, ate, ran, skipped, etc.
- Adverb (describes when, where or how): e.g. quickly, slowly, cautiously, etc.
- Preposition (show relation in time or place): e.g. under, above, on top of, etc.
Some of my silly sentences:
- That gruesome London swims slowly on top of the smelly America.
- His crazy giraffe ran weirdly under that happy snake.
- That sneaky hippogriff jumped energetically on your smelly trampoline.
- Five live lollipops farted naughtily below my graceful waterfall.

Philosophy for this week: are letters more important than numbers? Talk to the people in your house about this. What do you think?

Alphabet challenge – can you find items/objects in your house and garden that begin with each letter of the alphabet?! When you have, collect them together, order them alphabetically, sort the vowels from the consonants. Here is a picture of what other children have done.
Science
- Earth in Space – on a sunny day, stand outside and ask someone to draw around your shadow with chalk. Through out the day, go back and check what happens when you stand in the same place.
- Living, dead, never been alive – go for a hunt in your garden and house looking for things that are alive, things that were once alive but now dead, things that have never been alive. Complete sheet for this
Design & Technology
- Design & Technology-design a balanced picnic for the Tiger who came to tea. Remember your balanced plate learning you did with Mr Ross. Have a look at this link https://www.nhs.uk/change4life/recipes/healthier-lunchboxes
- Design & Technology – can you make or cook a healthy snack or even the picnic you designed for the tiger. You could then enjoy eating your picnic in your garden! Yum yum. Remember to post photos up on the learning discussion.
- Sewing – sew a button on to fabric or an item of clothing
History – Florence Nightingale (whole federation theme)
- Watch https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/true-stories-florence-nightingale/z68fcqt to find out about who Florence Nightingale was.
- Compare nursing in the past with nursing today. How is it similar or different? Write words or phrases on your pack sheet. Think about the learning we did on equality of men and women too.
- Florence Nightingale wrote lots of letters asking for help. Pretend you are a nurse today. What letter would you write to Boris Johnson? What help would you like?
- Florence Nightingale Reading Comprehension
- Florence Nightingale wordsearch
- Florence Nightingale was called ‘lady of the lamp’. You could make or draw a lamp and hold it while everyone claps at their doors for the nurses and NHS staff on Thursday night (if continued).
Geography
- Be a weather watcher and record the weather and season each day. If you have an outside thermometer, record the temperature too.
- Create a 3D model of a physical or human feature of Copdock for our 3D map exhibition. Parents can help with this.
Maths- 2D & 3d shapes
- Go on a2D /3D hunt shape, also unstick food packaging to make a net, then stick it back together
